BioPak is proud to be recognised at the 2025 Australasian Packaging Innovation & Design (PIDA) Awards, taking home three major awards that celebrate innovation, performance, and genuine sustainability in packaging design.
These wins reflect BioPak’s commitment to designing packaging that works in the real world, supporting businesses, complying with legislation, and enabling circular systems through certified compostable solutions.
Gold – Sustainable Packaging Design (Certified Compostable), BioPak’s PHA Cups
Gold – Beverage Packaging Design, BioPak’s PHA Cups
Silver – Labelling & Decoration Design, Beer BioCups
The awards highlight the impact of two standout product innovations: BioPak’s PHA Cups and Beer BioCups, both designed to help foodservice businesses move away from conventional plastics without compromising performance or customer experience.

PHA Cups: setting a new benchmark for compostable beverage packaging
BioPak’s PHA Cups were recognised with Gold awards in both Sustainable Packaging Design and Beverage Packaging Design, marking a major milestone for the packaging industry.
Made from PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), a biopolymer produced through natural fermentation, PHA Cups are the world’s first home compostable, leak-proof cups made entirely from renewable resources, with BioPak being the first company to bring them to the Australian market.
Designed to break down in home compost conditions, their innovation strives to solve one of the biggest challenges in beverage packaging, replacing plastic-lined cups without shifting the burden to industrial composting infrastructure. These awards acknowledge the years of research, development, and testing behind PHA, as well as BioPak’s commitment to advancing materials that support a truly circular economy.
While PHA Cups represent a significant breakthrough in compostable materials, their development also reinforced the realities of bringing next-generation materials to market. Market uptake was modest, and ongoing testing showed the PHA lining remains thicker, and therefore more costly than commercially viable alternatives at this stage. These learnings have been invaluable, helping inform future material development and guiding BioPak’s ongoing exploration of other plastic-free and low-impact cup solutions.
“PHA has been years in the making,” said former BioPak CEO Gary Smith. “These awards reflect the dedication of our team and our commitment as a B Corp to lead with purpose.” As we look ahead, our approach to innovation continues to be shaped by learnings, proving that meaningful progress comes from curiosity, persistence, and continual improvement.
Beer BioCups: helping events move beyond plastic
BioPak’s Beer BioCups were awarded Silver for Labelling & Decoration Design, recognising their visual design excellence, aesthetic appeal, and functional performance.
Designed specifically for high-volume events and festivals, Beer BioCups offer a certified compostable alternative to plastic beer cups, helping venues comply with single-use plastic bans while maintaining approved weights and measures for alcohol service.
Featuring a playful, beer-inspired print, the cups create an engaging experience for patrons while supporting closed-loop composting systems at events. Combined with BioPak’s composting education and initiatives such as Compost Connect, Beer BioCups demonstrate how thoughtful design can drive both behaviour change, playfulness and waste diversion at scale.

Recognition that reinforces BioPak’s mission
The PIDA Awards are the packaging industry’s most respected design and innovation program across Australia and New Zealand. For BioPak, this recognition reinforces the role of certified compostable packaging in supporting businesses through regulatory change and helping communities move toward a world without waste.
From material innovation and engaging design to end-of-life responsibility, BioPak remains focused on creating packaging that performs, complies, and contributes to circular systems, today and into the future.
